Brazil Officially Regulates iGaming with New Ordinance

Brazil has officially regulated its iGaming sector through Ordinance 1,207, published in the Official Gazette. This regulation permits online slots, roulette, blackjack, poker, and sports betting, setting the stage for a licensed online gambling market. The ordinance mandates that crash games must be random and not skill-based, with clear prize multipliers and payout tables. Additionally, live casino studios must meet stringent security and certification requirements. The regulation also includes a 15% tax on player winnings over BRL 2,824 (€510) and bans the use of credit cards and cryptocurrency for wagering. The first online gambling licenses are expected to be issued this year, with several operators already applying.

Funding Shortfalls Hamper Kenya's Betting Control and Licensing Board

The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) in Kenya is struggling to fulfill its regulatory duties due to insufficient government funding. Despite generating significant tax revenue from gambling, the BCLB's budget allocation remains inadequate, hindering its ability to combat illegal gambling and enforce regulations effectively. The board's director, Peter Mbugi, highlighted the surge in illegal online and land-based gambling activities, attributing the challenges to outdated laws and limited resources. Mbugi emphasized the need for technological solutions and legislative reforms to enhance regulatory capabilities. The BCLB's plight underscores the broader issue of resource allocation and regulatory effectiveness in Kenya's gambling sector.

Global Economy Faces Uncertainty Amid Decline in Gambling Stocks

The Brazilian Secretariat for Prizes and Bets (SPA) has mandated on-site inspections for the upcoming regulated online gambling market, as detailed in Ordinance 1,125. Starting January 2025, the SPA will conduct in-person visits to licensees' offices to ensure compliance. Additionally, the SPA will monitor operators' websites through the Betting Management System (SIGAP) and require operators to report any suspicions of match-fixing within five business days. The SPA reserves the right to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to inspect unlicensed operators. This regulation aims to enhance transparency and integrity within Brazil's online gambling sector.

Cyprus Launches Week-Long Safer Gambling Campaign

The Cyprus National Betting Authority has announced a week-long campaign to promote safer gambling, scheduled from October 7 to 13. The campaign, themed “Safety is the true hero in every game,” aims to raise awareness about the risks of gambling and provide resources for those seeking help. Activities will include presentations, educational seminars, hands-on workshops, and interactive games designed to engage the public and inform them about responsible gambling practices. The initiative underscores the authority's commitment to preventing gambling-related harm and creating a protective environment for players and society.
