Brazil Government Issues New Regulations for Online Gambling
The Brazilian Ministry of Finance's Secretariat for Prizes and Betting has recently published two ordinances aimed at regulating the online gambling market. The first ordinance, numbered 1.212 and released on July 31, outlines guidelines for transferring fixed-odds lottery revenue. The subsequent ordinance, 1.231, addresses responsible gaming practices, advertising, marketing, and the rights and obligations of both players and fixed-odds betting operators. Notably, the regulations require betting operators to educate consumers about addiction risks and provide options for spending limits and self-exclusion. These measures will take effect from January 1, 2025. Source: Yogonet.

British Online Gambling Sees 12% Growth in March to June
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) reports that Great Britain's online gross gambling yield (GGY) surged by 12% year-on-year to reach £1.46 billion during Q2. This remarkable growth coincided with a record-breaking number of bets and spins, totalling 24.5 billion. Online slots were the primary revenue driver, contributing £642 million, while real event betting also saw significant gains, especially during football's Euro 2024. The online casino segment also experienced growth, with table games (excluding slots) rising by 9.3%. However, poker GGY declined by 14%, and virtual betting remained relatively stable. Retail betting, on the other hand, faced challenges, with over-the-counter GGY slipping by 7%.
New Zealand to Introduce Online Casino Licensing Regime by 2026
As reported by Sigma, the New Zealand government is set to regulate online casinos for the first time, aiming to enhance consumer protection and tax collection. Under the new licensing framework, online casino operators must meet stringent criteria before offering services to New Zealanders. Licenses will be issued through an auction system, valid for three years with continuous compliance. The minimum age for online gambling will be 18. While licensed operators can advertise (currently banned), strict restrictions remain. Sports sponsorships by online casinos remain prohibited. The regulatory system is expected to be operational by early 2026, following public input during the Select Committee process. SkyCity Entertainment Group, a major player, supports this move toward responsible regulation.
