Supreme Court of Nigeria Rules Lottery Not Within Exclusive Legislative List

In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has declared that the lottery does not fall within the Exclusive Legislative List of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The case, Attorney General of Lagos State v. National Sports Lottery LTD and NSL Lottery Management Co. LTD clarified that this matter is beyond the jurisdiction of the National Assembly. The judgment, delivered on March 31, 2023, has far-reaching implications for regulating lottery and gaming activities in Lagos State, affirming the authority of the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority. UKGC Releases First Gambling Survey for Great Britain, Sets New Baseline for UK Gambling Behavior Analysis

Collaborating with the National Centre for Social Research and the University of Glasgow, the study aimed to establish a new baseline for understanding gambling behaviours in the UK. Key findings include a 48% participation rate among adults aged 18 and over, with males more likely to engage in gambling than females. The report provides valuable insights into problem gambling severity, gender differences, and participation rates, serving as a crucial resource for policymakers and researchers.

Philippine Lawmaker Urges POGO Ban Without Impacting IGLs

Philippines' Albay 2nd District Representative Joey Salceda has expressed his desire for the government to ban Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) without affecting the new Internet Gaming Licensees (IGLs). Following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s announcement of a total ban on POGOs in his 2024 State of the Nation Address (SONA), Salceda highlighted that POGOs constitute only a small fraction of the revenues from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR). Salceda stressed the importance of differentiating between POGOs and IGLs to ensure that legitimate internet gaming operations are not adversely affected. He hopes the government can find a way to implement the POGO ban without negatively impacting IGLs, emphasising proper regulation and enforcement to maintain the legitimate operations of IGLs.
